About Squirrel Trapping

Since squirrels are often seen as game animals, they are often legal to hunt and trap during various seasons throughout the year. This allows you to use killing traps legally as long as you have the proper permits and licenses. However, we only carry live catch traps, so you must decide what you will do with the squirrel once you have trapped it. Relocating a squirrel more than three miles is often illegal and rarely recommended. Just be prepared, think ahead, and make sure you are up to date on all laws in your area before you trap a squirrel.

How To Trap A Squirrel

People trap squirrels that cause damage to their property. Whether the squirrel has made its way into your attic or wall, or it is just gnawing and damaging your home or other items, a trap can be useful to remove the animal while you fortify and squirrel proof your home and property.

  • Choose a wire or cage trap that is at least 9 x 9 x 24 inches in diameter
  • Baited traps often work better than unbaited traps. You can “pre-bait” the trap, which means tying the trap open and allowing the squirrels to feed on the bait for several days to get them used to the trap.
  • Apple and orange slices, shelled walnuts, and peanut butter are all successful baits.
  • Squirrels can enter in through cracks, gaps, or holes as small as two inches in diameter.
  • Pay close attention and monitor squirrel behavior. This will help you to pinpoint where the squirrels are entering your home or causing damage, as well as what time of day they are most active and in and out of your home. This information helps you to set an effective trap.
  • Once you’ve discovered where the squirrels are getting in, try to close up all access points except for the main one the squirrels are using.
  • Set up a trap in the attic, either a cage trap or a one-way trap that lets the squirrel into the trap out to the outside, but it cannot access the home.
  • Avoid sealing in any remaining squirrels before you totally squirrel proof your home. Trapping in squirrels can lead to even more damage. Leave baited traps around for a few days after sealing your home, checking traps twice a day.
  • To squirrel-proof your home, choose stainless steel mesh, sheet metal aluminum materials, caulk, and foam. These can be used to seal the gaps squirrels and other pests enter through.
