How Talstar Pro (Talstar One) Works
Talstar P is a liquid concentrate insecticide which contains bifenthrin, a synthetic pyrethroid. Pyrethroids work by disrupting an insect's nervous system causing a weakened state followed by death. Talstar P does not provide an instant knockdown of pests, rather, pests pick up the residual active ingredient by contact. Talstar P is a repellent insecticide since it acts quickly enough that social insects such as ants cannot create a pheromone trail. This means that Talstar P will be most effective as a barrier with a thorough application. Talstar P residual can last up to 3 months.
Talstar P (Talstar One) controls over 75 different pests -- everything from stink bugs, bed bugs, spiders, mosquitoes, cockroaches, ticks and fleas to pillbugs, chinch bugs, earwigs, millipedes, Dichondra Flea Beetles, spittlebugs and more. It is very effective on Japanese Beetles, clover mites, ants, termites, spiders, scorpions, roaches, army worms, mealybugs, mites, grasshoppers, pillbugs, cutworms, sod webworms, weevils, leaf miners, box elder bugs, bees, wasps, sowbugs, crickets, and turf and ornamental pests. Please see below for complete list.

Talstar P is an ideal broad-spectrum insecticide for prevention, maintenance, or active infestations of over 75 pests. Talstar P provides a long-lasting barrier around the perimeters of structures for crawling insects such as ants, beetles, and roaches; protects ornamental plants from hazardous pests like mealybugs; helps control nuisance flying insects such as mosquitoes; protects lawns from turf pests such as chinch bugs; and even has an expanded label to include treatment of stink bugs. See below for complete list of approved usage sites.
Inside, outside, and around the perimeter of structures, food handling areas, lawns, turf and ornamental trees and shrubs. NOT for use on food and vegetable gardens. Talstar is best applied with a sprayer. Always read the label completely before use.
- 1 pint (16 oz.) concentrate yields 16-32 gallons of finished solution.
- 1 quart (32 oz.) concentrate yields 32-96 gallons of finished solution.
- ¾ gallon (96 oz.) concentrate yields 96-192 gallons of finished solution.
- 1 gallon (128 oz.) concentrate yields 128-256 gallons of finished solution or covers 128,000 to 256,000 square feet for broadcast application.
Standard Application Dilution Rates / Mixing Rates:
- 0.33 oz./gallon of water – 0.02% - prevention, low level infestions
- 0.5 oz./gallon of water – 0.031% – general indoor or outdoor use
- 1.0 oz./gallon of water - 0.06% - severe infestations, less frequent treatments, longer residual, quicker knockdown
- 1 gallon of finished solution should cover 1,000 square feet when using a hand pump sprayer.
* See the video above for general use mixing and application instruction using a sprayer like the Chapin premier 1 gallon sprayer.
Use in the Following Areas:
Indoors and outdoors on residential, institutional, public, commercial, and industrial buildings, greenhouses, animal confinement facilities/livestock premises, kennels, food handling establishments, and lawns, ornamentals, parks, recreational areas and athletic fields; trees, shrubs, foliage plants, non-bearing fruit and nut trees, and flowers in greenhouses, interiorscapes, including hotels, shopping malls, office buildings, etc., and outdoor plantscapes, such as around residential dwellings, parks, institutional buildings, recreational areas, athletic fields and home lawns (Non-bearing crops are perennial crops that will not produce a harvestable raw agricultural commodity during the season of application); feed and food handling establishments, animal confinement facilities, kennels, confined animal feeding operations, livestock premises, and in/around/under structures
Use 0.33 to 1 fluid oz. per gallon of water for residual pest control in buildings and structures and on modes of transport. Apply either as a crack and crevice, pinstream, spot, coarse, low pressure spray (25 psi or less) or with a paint brush.
Apply as a coarse, low pressure, crack and crevice or spot spray to areas where pests hide, such as baseboards, corners, storage areas, closets, around water pipes, doors and windows, attics and eaves, behind and under refrigerators, cabinets, sinks, furnaces, stoves, the underside of shelves, drawers and similar areas.
- Do not use as a space spray.
- Pay particular attention to cracks and crevices.
- Limit repeat application to no more than once per seven days.
Talstar P may be converted to a foam for residual treatment of voids or as a spot spray when visual marking of application is desired.
Thorough application should be made to crack and crevices where evidence of bed bugs occurs. This includes bed frames, boxsprings, inside empty dressers and clothes closets and carpet edges, high and low wall moldings and wallpaper edges. Do not use this product on bed linens, pillows, mattresses or clothes. Remove all clothes and other articles from dressers or clothes closets before application. Allow all treated areas to thoroughly dry before use. Not recommended for use as sole protection against bedbugs. If evidence of bedbugs is found in/on mattresses, use products approved for this use.
General application for crawling pests - Mix 0.5 or 1 oz. of Talstar P in one gallon of water and apply to the outside foundation of the home, approx. 3 feet up the side of the house and 2 feet out from the house. Also spray entry points into the home such as around windows, pipes, doorways, etc. For general preventative treatment, apply Talstar P once every 3 months.
- Repeat applications should be limited to no more than once per seven days when using 0.33 oz./gal. of water. For the high use rate of 1.0 oz. per gallon of water, do not apply more than once every four weeks.
In addition to the treatment around the foundation of the home as mentioned above, spray Talstar P on the underside of leaves on the lower-hanging branches of trees around the backyard or area where mosquitoes are a problem. You can also spray the underside of leaves on shrubs and ornamentals. Do not apply when wind speed exceeds 10 MPH.
Higher application volumes may be used to obtain the desired coverage of dense vegetation or landscaping materials.
Use 0.125 to 0.25 oz. per 1,000 square feet (or 5.4 - 10.8 oz. per 100 gal.). Apply as a full coverage foliar spray. Use of a Chapin Slide Pump Sprayer will help reach higher into trees. Apply when larvae begin to hatch and spray larvae directly. Applications when larvae are young will be most effective.
Use 0.5 to 1.0 oz. per 1,000 square feet. Chinch Bugs infest the base of grass plants and are often found in the thatch layer. Irrigation of the grass area before treatment will optimize the penetration of the insecticide to the area where the chinch bugs are located. Use higher volume applications if the thatch layer is excessive or if a relatively long mowing height is being maintained. Chinch Bugs can be one of the most difficult pests to control in grasses and the higher application rates (Up to 1 fluid oz. per 1000 square feet) may be required to control populations that contain both nymphs and adults during the middle of the summer.
A hose end sprayer like the Chapin hose end sprayer may be used to apply Talstar P for lawn pests. Use up to 1.0 oz. per 1,000 square feet. Higher volume applications may be more effective with some pests, so you may want to calibrate the sprayer to a lower rate (for example, 0.25 oz/gal.) and use more water to cover a 1,000 square foot area.
Talstar P has an expanded label for treatment of Stink Bugs indoors, outdoors, on lawns, and on ornamental plants. Use 0.33 to 1.0 oz/gal. of water and treat around door frames, window frames, vents, eaves, around the bottom of your foundation, and any other crack or crevice where an insect could gain entry, once a month August-November.
Talstar P may be used for pre-construction or post-construction prevention of subterranean termites. Use 1.0 oz/gal. of water (0.06% solution) for most termite applications. For preconstruction horizontal barriers (such as under a concrete slab), use 1 gallon of solution per 10 square feet. For perimeter barrier treatments, use 4 gallons of solution per 10 linear feet. See our article How to Do a Termite Treatment, for further instructions on perimeter termite treatments. See product label for full instructions on using Talstar P to control subterranean termites.

Works better than Diazinon
By Jay on 09/18/2008
I bought a quart of Talstar One two years ago. It works better than I would've imagined. I spray around the perimeter of house about 2-3 times a year and it keeps any and all pests away. I used Diazinon before but those results pale in comparison to Talstar One. I hope you have this product for a long time to come.

By Linda in Prescott, AZ on 04/30/2010
We live in the high desert of Northern AZ where there are scorpions, millipedes and lots of other nasty insects. Within a matter of weeks after moving into our new house the scorpions started showing up inside the house. We have several dogs and cats and I was concerned for their safety as well as our own. A friend recommended a professional pest control company and things improved dramatically after the first treatment. We signed up for regular treatment which was every 3 months. Unfortunately, it was to their schedule which seemed to constantly change and it became extremely inconvenient for us. They would even want to spray while it was raining. The last time the pest control guy was here my husband asked what they used and the guy was more than willing to tell him that it was Talstar P. After my husband told me the name I Googled it and found DoMyOwnPestControl. We then decided to do our own pest control and not be at the mercy of someone elses schedule. It's very easy, effective and, needless to say, costs a LOT less money - one quart lasted us almost two years and cost about the same as one of the pest control company's visits. More importantly we spray at the optimum time and under the best weather conditions.

Does not break down quickly in sunlight
By William on 07/02/2008
Talstar P is an excellent product because it is so persistent and does not break down. Most phosphor based products break down the moment they are expose to sunlight. This one will not. We have an open ditch behind our property that used to be the home to millions of mosquitoes - not anymore. I spray about 200 ft of the ditch in either direction twice a year, using a total of perhaps 30 oz of Talstar a year, and we have been mosquito free for three years.

Read the directions, spray it yourself & save big!
By Karen in Georgia on 07/23/2009
It seems our entire street lives on an ant hill, because we could not keep those varmints out for long. I was paying $75 per quarter for pest control in our house and outside as well. I read the directions, applied a band around the outside perimeter, windows and doorways of our home and I have not seen one bug, ant, or anything for the past 2 months. We have had rainy and exceptionally dry weather, too. I highly recommend Talstar One.

Talstar P (talstar one) is the best I have ever used in pest control. I swear by it.
By John in Chattanooga on 12/08/2017
Mixed it like it said and sprayed. Spiders falling out everywhere. Sprayed around garage where door is left open a lot in warmer weather. See dead bugs on floor, seems to work well.
By George in Glendale Az on 12/01/2017
Just spray a good amount all around your house & some inside because there's no smell or stains and give it at LEAST 24 hours for the bugs to die. Perfect all purpose pest control.
talstar P and fleas
By Dennis in punta gorda , florida on 12/01/2017
I live in south west Florida close to the gulf and fleas are a persistent problem here. I have bought every over-the-counter product you could and none helped so I thought about trying DoMyOwn and they recommendation of Talstar P has made a difference. I will retreat about every 2 months but my dog no longer has a flea problem.
Works on Spider Mites on Plants!
By Dale in Monroe on 11/24/2017
Purchased this for insect control in a basement. The very day this arrived, I sprayed a house plant with a very dilute solution to try to eliminate spider mites. Worked in less than a week. Thanks!

Talstar P is an excellent, versatile insecticide. Easy to apply, minimal environmental risks, and controls a wide range of insects. Recommended to me by a family member, Talstar P has proven to be as good as recommended. Far cheaper than a professional insect treatment service.

Not as good as suspend sc
By Eric in Starke, Florida on 11/17/2017
I'm trying the talstar to target mosquitoes, and it's ok seems to work. The price is better than suspend sc but not as effective and slower to work in comparison. Better value in bulk, but not as good as the suspend sc.

If you want to keep roaches out of your home, Talstar is the product. Spray every few months and it continues to kill them all.

Ask a Question
QWhat is the correct mixture of Talstar P for indoor and outdoor prevention.
The mixture would be for roaches, silverfish, and ants etc. We have tree roaches and have controlled them with a professional exterminator till now. We will use inside and outside.
AFor the initial application and in areas where pest populations are high you should use 1 oz of Talstar per gallon of water for indoor and outdoor use. For maintenance applications you can use 1/2 ounce of Talstar per gallon of water.
QWhat is the shelf life of Talstar P? How long does the unused portion of the pesticide retain it's strength and effectiveness after opening?
AThe manufacturer gives Talstar P a shelf life of 3 years as long as you keep the top on the bottle and you do not store it in direct sunlight or in extreme temperatures.
QWhat are mixing instructions for Talstar P per gallon of water?
AIt depends on the pest you are treating for, but for the most part you would typically use 1 oz. per gallon of water. The bottle of Talstar P comes with a convenient measuring device on the bottle for easy use.
QIs Talstar safe near dogs and cats?
ATalstar P is safe to use around animals as long as they are out of the area while you are spraying. They can return as soon as the area is dry. Talstar P is odorless, dries clear, leaves no stains, is non-irritating to the skin, and will not break down easily with rainfall.
QWhich product is more recommended for termites Talstar P or Termidor SC?
My home was originally treated with Talstar 72 from the builder 5 years ago.
ATermidor SC is the #1 termite product on the market. When used as an in-ground barrier treatment, Termidor SC will protect your home or business for over 10 years. Termidor SC is completely undetectable by termites and once termites touch it they contact, ingest and spread the termiticide until it eliminates the entire colony. Termidor SC controls all types of termites including subterranean, formosan, and drywood termites. Talstar P lasts for about 5 years in the ground and works as a repellent, killing only those insects that come into contact with the treated area.

QWhat is the best method to kill fire ant mounds using Talstar P?
A Yes, Talstar P can be used for fire ant control in the type of sprayer you described, but you will also need to do mound drenching. According to the Talstar P product label, "Fire Ant Mound control is optimized by combining broadcast applications that will control foraging workers and newly mated fly-in queens with mound drenches that will control existing colonies. If the soil is not moist, then it is important to irrigate before application or use a high volume application. Apply broadcast treatments at 0.5 to 1 fluid oz. per 1,000 square feet. Use enough finished volume to penetrate thatch or sod. Treat mounds by applying 1 oz of Talstar P per mound in 1 to 2 gallons water by sprinkling the mound until it is wet and treat 3 feet out around the mound. Use the higher volume for mounds larger than 12”. Treat mounds with sufficient force to break their apex and allow the insecticide solution to flow into the ant tunnels. For best results, apply in cool weather (65 - 80F) or in early morning or late evening hours."

QDoes Talstar P kill chiggers, fleas and ticks? (Mainly chiggers)
I have sprayed my lawn (1/2 acre) with Talstar and still get chigger bite's when I walk out in my yard. I just order more Talstar from you guys just wondering if I should be applying something else instead.
A Talstar P is labeled for chiggers, fleas and ticks outdoors at 1 fl oz per gallon of water per 1,000 sq ft. Treatments for chiggers should begin in May and could need to continue through the summer as new chiggers move into the area. Treating the entire lawn is of little benefit because chiggers avoid direct sunlight and normally will not infest areas that are mowed or otherwise well maintained. Focus treatment on the unkempt areas of the lawn and lawn edge.
