Will spraying the web of tent caterpillars kill them? Or does the actual worm need to be sprayed?

Last year we caught the worms too late and they had already done damage. they were all over the trees! This year I've already seen 2 webs but no worms yet.. I'm hoping i can spray the web now and not have to wait until i see caterpillars!
