Tom from Washington writes

Will surge kill yellow pine tree seedlings?

I have volunteer pine tree seedlings in rock flower beds will surge kill those? I would like them gone.

Answer:

Surge is not labeled for trees or similar brush, so it will have little to no effect on the seedlings. For post-emergent control, you can spot treat with a non-selective herbicide such as Fertilome Brush Killer and Stump Killer with Triclopyr, keeping in mind that this will affect the flowers if it contacts them. Unfortunately, products that will be labeled for trees and woody plants will also affect the flowers that you want to keep.
